We notice that the vast majority of the neighborhoods have Syriac names, and some of them may even have a Phoenician origin, and it is widely believed that the name Ehmej is adapted from Syriac by replacing the Gh with a J. The meaning of the old Syriac word is “Top of the Valley”, and perhaps it is due to its location that oversees Al-Fidar valley.
Ehmej could also have an Arabic origin, it could be derived from the Arabic Verb “Ahmaja” which means “to hide”, since the village has been hidden between wild forests for the past centuries.
Ehmej is located 900 to 1300 meters above sea level, 60 km away from Beirut, the capital, and 20 km from Jbeil, the region’s center.
