Ehmej has many emigrants especially in Europe and America as well as many Arab and African countries. Inhabitants of Ehmej started to emigrate since the era of strife and chaos and after the end of the Chehab emirate. This phenomenon continued because of difficult living conditions during the period of Mutasarrifiate and World War I. They continued to emigrate and headed, after the United States of America and Brazil, to Europe, Australia, and more recently to Arab countries.
The first emigrants to America created several associations and clubs through which they preserved their town’s traditions and customs during holidays and special occasions. They didn’t overlook traditional songs and Lebanese food such as Taboule and Kebbeh. They also showed solidarity in times of happiness and sorrow and visited each others in holidays and special occasions. Ehmej emigrants in France followed the path of their fellows in the United States of America by establishing the“Brotherhood of Ehmej” association which was launched thanks to the efforts of late businessman Sheikh Joseph Abdo Al Khoury, as the Lebanese civil war began. This association was a bond of support and help between the emigrants and their parents in Ehmej, to preserve the solidarity and keep their close relation with their hometown.
Today, every summer, Ehmej is swarmed with its emigrants who return every year to participate in its activities; Ehmej festival is the most eminent yearly activity.
